Finding rt.jar in JRE 5.0 Update 9Today, I tried to step up my Sun JRE 5.0 Update 2 to Sun JRE 5.0 Update 7 and Update 9. I like the self Linux self-extracting file, mainly because I like moving files around and have more control. After extracting everything, I typed "java" to give it a try and got the following error message: Error occurred during initialization of VM What's going on? It sounds like it couldn't find the class library in the rt.jar file. I search for rt.jar and noticed that it doesn't exist at all! What happened? I started looking at the files in the "lib" directory. No rt.jar in sight. But there is a rt.pack. What the heck is this? After digging on the Internet, I was able to unpack it by issuing the following command: unpack200 rt.pack rt.jar How does Sun expect any consumer to download JRE 5.0 Update 9 and install it is beyond me. I'm a programmer, and it took me a while to put bits and pieces together to figure this out. Chieh Cheng
